Years 5&6

Public Transport

September 2024

Hello to our new community, and welcome to the official release of our newsletter! You’re here because you want to support your child’s learning as effectively as possible, we’re here because we know how difficult that can be.

A big thank you to those families who signed up for the pre-release of our newsletter and have been our guinea pigs over the past few months 🙂

Happy learning!

The Headlines

Last Month’s Learning

Thank you to all those who took the time to send us their beautiful photos from last month’s Maths focus, ‘In The Kitchen’. So great to get your feedback and see so much authentic and meaningful learning taking place.

From top left to bottom right…

Barney & Martha, hard at work in the kitchen.
Imogen having a grate time (ho ho) baking.
Ivy rolling the dough for a yummy pizza.
Sunay and his mum putting their mix into the oven.

Got an idea for future topics? Let us know!

A Tavistock Haunting

This month’s spot light is shining brightly on Charlie…

Charlie is 11 and creative writing is his thing! He saw this project as an opportunity for his writing to be heard by a wider audience and a means for non-readers to access good quality story-telling. We packed so much meaningful learning into this one! Enjoy!

Think our project-based approach could work for your child?

Welcome Helena!

This month we have been in the company of children’s author Helena Pielichaty. She’s been reviewing and feeding back on some of our aspiring story writers’ projects as well as giving us a peek into her world.

Look out for this content on our socials!

New Focus

‘Public Transport’

Reading texts that are structured in different ways and reading for a range of purposes.

Timetables, posters, adverts, announcement boards, etc. Involve them in the logistics of the journey so that the reading has a purpose. Ask them to find out platform numbers, departure times etc.

Drawing inferences such as inferring characters’ (peoples’) feelings, thoughts and motives from their actions.

Look around the bus/ train or out of the window! It’s going to be a hub of activity with so much going on and so much inferring to be done!

Retrieve, record and present information from non-fiction

This is totally linked to the first objective. Ask for specific information which they have to try and retrieve and present to you. Check out our question prompts for inspo!
